Using Baking Soda for Natural Teeth Whitening

By Shaun P. Reily

There is never a second chance to make a first impression, and your smile goes a long way in making that first impression. The color of a person's teeth is the first thing we notice about them as we smile and greet each other. But you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars at the dentist to get that shining white smile you need to make a great first impression.

If you don't have the budget for professional teeth whitening procedures you may want to consider saving your money and whitening your teeth with baking soda. However, there are some tricks to keep in mind to avoid the unpleasant taste and slow results usually associated with this method.

By using this natural at home whitening formula you can whiten your teeth quickly and without the bad flavor of brushing with just baking soda by itself.

In an airtight container you need to combine 4 teaspoons of glycerin, 6 teaspoons of baking soda and top it off with a few drops of peppermint extract for flavor. This will provide a better flavor and texture than baking soda alone when used in place of your regular toothpaste.

Rinsing with hydrogen peroxide will greatly increase the speed of your results. Mixing peroxide with water before rinsing will dilute it and provide a mild whitening rinse without the burn.

The addition of hydrogen peroxide into your whitening toothpaste recipe is also an excellent option that will allow you to whiten your teeth faster while you brush them. Simply place a few drops of the peroxide solution into your toothpaste before brushing.

The most effective combination of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for teeth whitening however is to simply brush your teeth with the baking soda toothpaste you have made and then follow up with a good rinse and gargle of a peroxide mouthwash made with equal parts of water and hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide will rapidly accelerate your whitening results but there are a few safety measures you will need to bear in mind to avoid any tooth damage or injury. Be sure the peroxide you are using is the food grade 2% solution found in grocery stores. You must also be very careful never to swallow hydrogen peroxide as it can damage your esophagus. Follow these guidelines and you will begin seeing a whiter smile in no time. - 29879
