Can Bruxism Be Cured?

By Sally Gertort

People who have bruxism want to figure out how to stop grinding their teeth. Teeth grinding at night doesn't seem too serious at first look but it is one of those things over time can do some serious damage. Everyone wants to have healthy teeth and if you suffer from bruxism and don't do anything about it for 30 years, some real problems can develop.

Grinding your teeth at night is hard to stop because you do it in your sleep and most people are not even aware they are doing it. How is it possible to stop something that you dont even know you are doing? Anyone who has night time bruxism faces this special challenge of curing a bad habit that they cannot even be aware they are doing.

If you do grind your teeth at night, your dentist will probably be the one to tell you because he will see evidence of grinding on the surface of your teeth. Your dentist will then want to fit you with a custom mouth guard that will minimize the damage. Unfortunately, this night time mouth guard will not help you stop grinding teeth but only lessen or stop the ongoing damage to your teeth. Additionally, the mouth guard your dentist will want to fit you for can cost between $500 to $1000 because it is specially made.

Another option is to try to cure the problem yourself. Unfortunately, this may not be easy to do as there is no one single cure for all people. The reasons why people grind their teeth are very different for each person and so there is no such thing as a cure that will work for everyone. People grind their teeth for many reasons including stress, a nervous habit, teeth that are misaligned, or some other unknown problem. Identifying what is specifically causing your bruxism could take a while to figure out.

This leaves you with a choice: do you get the mouth guard to slow down the damage or do you try to find a real cure to stop your bruxism once and for all? This is a choice that is hard to make as there is no one clear path for success. However, whether you ultimately decide on a mouth guard or try to fix the problem naturally, it is best that you get started right away to minimize the damage to your teeth. - 29879
