Knowing the Cause of Angular Cheilitis is Important for Effective Treatment

By Keree Jenkins

For each person who suffers with angular cheilitis, figuring out the cause in their case is the first thing they need to do to be able to effectively treat this. There are some direct and suspected factors thought to contribute to the development of angular cheilitis, sometimes called perleche.

Of course, determining the cause involved will also determine the method of treatment. For instance, there are several known nutritional deficiencies which can lead to developing the painful cracks at the corners of the mouth. A lack of B-vitamins and possibly zinc and iron deficiencies are often thought by doctors to play a part in angular cheilitis. In these cases, supplementing with these nutrients would be the first line of defense.

Some people develop the habit of licking their lips, especially if they're already chapped, often in the winter. This and biting the lips has led to many cases of angular cheilitis, very commonly in children. To avoid repeated bouts, these habits need to be stopped.

The elderly may suffer with the condition because of poorly fitting dentures which can lead to pooling of saliva in the mouth where bacteria can gather, so soaking the dentures daily in a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water for non-metal dentures, or as directed by a dentist, is an important step to take. In this case, getting properly fitting dentures may be necessary for a permanent solution.

People with lowered immunity often develop the sore, painful lesions too, and they are at higher risk for bacterial, fungal, and viral infections to set up, though this can happen to anyone suffering with the disorder.

While many have tried to get rid of this embarrassing and persistent problem, more often than not, they end up with yet another round of battle, with no permanent solution. But many others who haven't given up have finally won the war. They followed the advice of one of those people, a mom who really did find a permanent solution to angular cheilitis. - 29879
